Following the arrest of dozens of activists and senior members of riformist parties and increasing pressure in risolving such organizations, the first branch of “Hezb Hamian Velayat” (Party of Guardianship Supporters) in the province of Lorestan commenced its activities. With the constitution of “Hezb Hamian Velayat” in Lorestan, the founders of this party announced that “the party is at service of all people in general and in specific, basing its approach on the principles of Velayat-e Faghih (Guardianship of the Jurist by the Supreme Leader), Amr be maroof (order people to take good actions), Nahy az Monker (forbid what is wrong) and support to Velayat Motlaghe Faghigh (Absoloute Guardianship of the Jurist)”. Iran will cease diesel exports from September as it starts to build inventories ahead of the peak demand period starting in the autumn, an official from the state’s production and supply arm said. The world’s fifth-largest crude exporter has been exporting up to 450,000 barrels a month of diesel since the end of the second quarter, the official from the National Iranian Oil Products Distribution Company said. Interview: Clare Atkinson

In 2003, Shirin Ebadi became the first Iranian to be awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. She is a lawyer, who gained entrance to the Faculty of Law at Tehran University in 1965. In 1975 she became the first woman in the history of Iran’s justice system, to be made the president of Bench 24 of the Tehran City Court. She then set up her own practice after receiving her lawyer’s license in 1992. Ebadi has written several books and many of her articles have been published in Iranian journals. About two weeks ago, sitting behind my computer early one morning in London , I received an email inviting me to support a Coalition formed by several groups within the larger women’s movement in Iran . The accompanying leaflet went to great lengths explaining that the Coalition’s purpose was not to support the elections, a particular candidate or indeed to encourage anyone to vote in the forthcoming presidential elections. Its sole purpose was to publicise the demands of the Coalition; firstly for the Islamic Republic to unconditionally ratify Convention on the Elimination of all forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW) and secondly to amend certain articles within the Constitution.
